Junior Construction Manager

As a site photographer/journalist, you will work with construction project teams to help document the construction process and transmit important project status updates and progress trackers to the client’s executive team.  Each project is different, and the work starts with understanding each project’s unique needs and how the executive team wants to see what is happening on a given project. In this role, you will be the ‘eyes and ears’ of the client executive team onsite.  It is crucial that in this role, you work to establish and foster a strong daily working relationship with the General Contractor’s onsite superintendent and project staff.  They will be your main resource when it comes to understanding the work onsite, responding to photo comments (see below), and knowing what is happening onsite in general.  They will also be a resource for understanding the various RFIs on a project and helping to escalate when critical RFIs or issues arise.

 Specific job duties will include:

-     Meeting Notes. Taking meeting notes is different from traditional meeting “minutes” in that meeting notes should tell the story of the meeting and include color and descriptive language to help the client executives understand the tone of the meeting and to help them feel like they were there.  This is a diary of the meeting which should include general discussion points, notes on the attitudes/mood, and potential impacts to the project.

-       Daily Photos: Between structured (taken from the same locations each day) and unstructured photos, between 20-200 photos can be taken each day (depending on the project progress) and should again tell the story of the project’s progress so the client’s executive team can review these daily and have a feel for what is being installed from day to day. Also part of this duty is to compile a photo responses document.  As the days go on, the client executive team will make comments and ask questions on specific photos. It will be your job to compile responses to these questions and make sure the loop of information gets closed back to the client exec.

-       Daily Logs: Using client-supplied tools such as Procore, the daily log is where a write-up is generated which describes activity onsite that day, including anything that stands out, construction activities onsite, special visitors, jobs well done, items that interest you in general, team interaction, and accomplishments and potential issues.

-       Infrastructure Trackers: These are simplified versions of the construction drawings on which daily construction work in place progress is highlighted and tracked by trade. This is another tool to help the executive team see exactly what work is being completed from day to day.

Overall it is important to remember that this role’s main duty is to help the client’s executive understand what is happening day-to-day onsite and provide them with quality descriptions of that activity via the above tools.  You are the daily eyes and ears of the client and should rely on a strong relationship with the general contractors site team to be able to document project progress consistently and accurately so the client executive team always feels like they have a thorough understanding of the progress of their construction project.
